Recruiting 2016--Kevin Mensah III

I've blogged about Kevin Mensah, a 5-9 180 pound RB/Athlete from Worcester, MA a couple of times before.

Sujuiceonline.com reports UMass has made his final six schools.

See also this link.

This 247Sports article dated July 20th mentions Mensa and reports on the football camp in Boston that had many local players.

Friday--July 31st, 2015

Dan Malone has a post on UMass' hopes for an improved defense.

A lot of things improved in 2014, but the defense struggled in nine of the Minutemen's 12 games. UMass gave up 33 points/game and 448 yards of offense in 2014. The totals for 2013 were 33 points and 433 yards/game. In our three wins against Kent State, Eastern Michigan and Ball State, UMass gave up 17, 14 and 10 points respectively. In our other five MAC games the UMass defense gave up 202 points or 40.4 points/game.

Let's hope for some substantial improvement in 2015. The defensive struggles are really no surprise as the offense has had a majority of the scholarships and transfers since we went FBS.

IMHO, UMass should follow the lead of Kansas State and bring in a number of JUCO's and transfers every year. The Minutemen just do not have the recruiting base to take in all four-year players.

Consider Boston College: the Eagles have pretty much dominated New England recruiting. Go over to the BC blog "BC Interruption" and they'll be glad to tell you as much.

Then consider what Boston College has done over the last five years.

2010 7-6
2011 4-8
2012 2-10
2013 7-6
2014 7-6

Five of the Eagles' wins in that period were over FCS teams and Boston College is 0-4 in Bowl games since 2008...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dan also looks at UMass' attempts to cure the Minutemen's long-running kicking woes.

UMass added three kickers to this year's squad: K Mike Caggaino (FR.) K Jack Coveney (Fr.), K Theo Yongue (R-Fr.)

Caggaino is likely to be the instant starter. If UMass' kicking game just improved to average, it could add one or two wins in 2015.

Recruiting 2015--Ali Ali-Musa

Ali Musa #9/image credit unknown
Several recruiting sources report UMass has offered to Ali Ali-Musa a 6-2 280 pound DT from Nassau Community College.

Bob McGovern reports on Ali-Musa's visiting UMass.

The following is a partial quote from a July 26th article by Scott Eklund of JCfootball.com:

"My trip was great," Ali-Musa told JCFootball.com after returning home from Amherst. "They had a great atmosphere there and the players and coaches were great too."

The visit to see UMass was Ali-Musa's first official visit and the Minutemen are one of four schools to offer the talented and versatile defensive line prospects, joining Buffalo, Tennessee-Martin and Bethune Cookman.

As a freshman last season, Ali-Musa led the Lions with five sacks and 13.5 tackles-for-loss while also posting 42 tackles, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery from his strongside defensive end spot. "

Hudl.com has video.

Besides UMass, Ali-Musa holds offers from Buffalo, Tennessee-Martin and Bethune Cookman.

Wednesday--July 29th, 2015

MAC Media Day is today from 1-3 on ESPN 3

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Dan Malone continues his unit 2015 previews and says the defensive secondary must live up to its experience.

The defensive backs, like the wide receiver corps is a senior-heavy group. They've been through the fire of the Molnar years and their experience should pay off in 2015.

The starting corners should be Randall Jette and Trey Dudley Giles. Jette has 34 career starts and Trey Dudley-Giles 27. Joe Colton and Khary Bailey-Smith have 22 and 23 starts respectively.

In the key reserves Jackson Porter has 8 starts. Jesse Monteiro has 12 GP. Kelton Brackett is the UAB transfer. Charan Singh is a RSFR.

UMass fans will be looking at an all-new secondary for 2016, but this year should be best since we went FBS.

Recruiting 2016--Leon Flanagan II

Flanagan #33
I blogged Sunday and today about Leon Flanagan's verbal to UMass at last weekend's Clam Bake.

Tom Dowd of siadvance.com has a story about Flanagan's verbal to UMass. It turns out his coach played for Tom Masella at BU and he sent film to Masella at UMass.

Flanagan will be considered as an OLB for the Minutemen.

Tuesday--July 28th, 2015

Dan Malone reports on the three verbals UMass received at last weekend's Clam Bake. I blogged about the commits on Sunday.

MassLive starts the 2016 Minutemen datbase. As Dan points out, UMass has 27 seniors in 2015. This coming recruiting class should be large and influential over the next four years.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dan continues his 2015 preview considering Tajae Sharpe and the wide receiver corps. Sharpe has a chance to re-write the Minutemen receiving records. He's got NFL size and his route-running and catching have all improved.

There'll be a real changing of the guard after this year as Jalen Wiliams, Bernard Davis, Elgin Long and Marken Michael are all seniors.

I think Shakur Nesmith, Darrien Josey and Lamarriel Taylor all have a chance to be the "X" receiver in 2016.

Sunday--July 26th, 2015 UMass receives three verbals

According to Mark Chiarelli of Maroon Musket, UMass received three verbals in yesterday's recruiting Clam Bake.

I blogged about Taylor Edwards yesterday. Rated two or three stars by recruiting services, Edwards chose UMass over offers from UConn, Old Dominion and Wake Forest.

Saturday--July 25th, 2015

Looks like the weather will be good for the UMass recruiting Clam Bake this weekend. Hope a number of recruits make a good decision to join an up-and-coming program!

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Dan Malone previews the 2015 Minutemen running backs. The running game is a big part of Whipple's offense. I remember being in attendance at at Wednesday Sports luncheon and someone asked about Whipple preference during close games. He replied "I'm going to keep handing it to Number 5".

UMass finished 11th in the not-defense heavy MAC in rushing. The Minutemen totaled under a 100 yards rushing in six games: 55 against BC, 88 vs Vanderbilt, 3 against Penn State, 49 against Bowling Green, 52 against Toledo and 67 vs Akron. UMass lost all those games.

Last year in Summer camp, Jamal Wilson was being considered the lead back after Harris left. He averaged 4.4 yards against BC, Colorado and Vanderbilt. UMass has had injury problems in the backfield for three straight years. I would not be surprised if Sekai Lindsey or Marquis Young sees action despite being true freshmen if the current backfield continues to struggle.

BTW, Drew Harris ended up enrolling at the DII Indiana University of Pennsylvania Crimson Hawks.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Our favorite newspaper and Boston.com  takes a shot at Josh Maurer and UMass football here and here.

Yeah, geniuses, it's Josh's fault the Red Sox suck.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

The 2015 Akron Zips look to do it with defense again. Akron could feature two Ohio State, one Colorado State and an Iowa State transfers in their defense. The Zips were #1 in scoring defense and #3 in total defense in the MAC in 2014.

Friday--July 24th, 2015

I believe UMass will have one of it's Clam Bake recruiting events this weekend. The Minutemen received four verbals from the Clam Bake in 2014 and six in 2013.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Blake Frohnapfel
Blake Frohnapfel has been named one of 30 QB's in contention for the Manning Award.

The Manning Award was created by the Allstate Sugar Bowl.

Bleacher Report has the full list. Besides Frohnapfel, UMass fans will see two other nominees: Pj. Walker of Temple and Joe Licata of Buffalo.

Dan Malone has a post on Frohnapfel's nomination.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Minutemen website also has a story about Blake Frohnapfel's summer internship.

Dan Malone has a report that says "All eyes are on Blake Frohapfel after a breakout season".

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Frohnapfel gets an "honorable mention" in this Bleacher Report post on the top QB's Notre Dame will face in 2015.

I received the following information about the MAC Conference Media Day

2015 MAC FOOTBALL MEDIA DAY LIVE ON ESPN3;

WEDNESDAY, JULY 29 FROM FORD FIELD IN DETROIT

For Immediate Release—Monday, July 20, 2015

Cleveland, Ohio – The Mid-American Conference (MAC) will host its 2015 Football Media Day on Wednesday, July 29, from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm, from Ford Field in Detroit.  The MAC Football Media Day kicks off the 2015 season, which officially begins on Thursday, Sept. 3, and will conclude with the 2015 Marathon MAC Football Championship Game on Friday, Dec. 4 from Ford Field.

Once again this year’s MAC Football Media Day will be show live on ESPN3 from 1:00 to 3:00 pm.  The ESPN3 production will highlight the league’s annual kickoff event as hosts Michael Reghi and Dustin Fox will visit with all MAC head coaches and several students throughout MAC Football Media Day.

Joining MAC Commissioner, Dr. Jon Steinbrecher for MAC Football Media Day will be head coaches from our member institutions and two students from each university.  Commissioner Steinbrecher will begin MAC Football Media Day and address the media at 11:00 am ET. All head coaches and students will be available to the media throughout the day.

In addition, the MAC will also have Michael Kelly, Chief Operating Officer of the College Football Playoff, and Bill Carollo, Coordinator of Football Officials for the Collegiate Officiating Consortium (MAC, Big Ten, Missouri Valley Conferences) as a participant in MAC Football Media Day.

Blake Frohnapfel and Jovan Santos-Knox will be the two UMass players who will accompany Coach Whipple to the Media Day.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dan Malone previews the UMass offensive line. One interesting player is former JUCO Ryan Johnson. He did not become eligible until after the season started last year. That meant he did not have summer camp. At 6-5 320 he was touted as a potential starter when he first signed. Johnson only has one year of eligibility left and it will be interesting to see if he cracks the starting lineup.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dan also has some comments on UMass AD Ryan Bamford's Twitter feed. Bamford says the Minutemen will play an FCS game every year. With a tough independent schedule coming up, a winnable FCS game will help.

Molly O'Mara named as Associate AD for Communications & Public Relations. She will be the primary contact for UMass football. For the last three seasons she functioned in that capacity for the University of Arizona and was the primary contact for Wildcat football.

Besides the obvious wins and losses, it seems to me that a league would look at a school's athletic dept structure to see if is comparable with what other league schools have. UMass AD Ryan Bamford is continuing to build a athletic dept that meets the needs of FBS football.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

UMass TE Todd Stafford was arrested Saturday for second degree breach-of-the-peace in Connecticut. Stafford was originally recruited by Coach Molnar as a QB and was switched to TE after Coach Whipple arrived. He did not appear on the two-deep last year.

Dan Malone has a story on Stafford's arrest.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dan Malone also has post on some uniform changes for the 2015 season.

As I have said numerous times, I like the all-whites for the road uniforms. The all-maroon is good too.

I dunno about the gray. I did not like the black helmets of the Molnar era. Black accent stripes on the helmets and uniforms are OK we did that back in FCS days.

Five Notre Dame Game Day traditions.

------------------------------------------------------------------

The ACC conference is having its Media Days. The Boston College blog "BC Interruption looks at the Coastal Division story lines.

I was reading my preseason college football magazines over the weekend and contemplated Boston College. The Eagles may have a tough time being bowl-qualified this year. They play two FCS teams (Maine and Howard) and only one FCS win counts towards bowl eligibility. It probably doesn't help their season ticket sales either.

Probable BC losses include:

Florida State (consensis ACC champion)
@ Clemson
@ Louisville (BC lost last year at home 19-38)
Virginia Tech (Phil Steele's pick to win the Coastal Division)
Notre Dame (a Top-15 or better pick by the preseason magazines)

That means the Eagles need to win all five of their remaining games:

Northern Illinois (11-3 last year)
@ Duke (9-4 last year)
Wake Forest
NC State  (8-5 last year)
@ Syracuse

Rivals.com two-star player.

Partial quote from a 05/19/15 article on Tucker by Scout.com:

"The talent is clearly there. Tucker at one time was on the Scout Top 300 watch list -- before he missed his junior year due to injury. He starred as a defensive lineman on his sophomore tape.

Now he has grown even more and his future may be on the defensive line, but he has a great wingspan and size to be a real difference maker as well on the offensive line in college.

O-line may be the position he has the most ranking value, but 'Big Tuck' does not care about his future position. He just wants to play.

"My biggest strengths are working hard with my teammates and being versatile too," Tucker informed. "I can play the offensive line or the defensive line."

Besides UMass, Tucker holds offers from Tulane, UTSA, North Texas and New Mexico.

Tajae Sharpe has been named to the Fred Biletnikoff Award Watch List. I think Sharpe will be the Minutemen's next NFL draft pick. He's been an FBS receiver since his freshman days. In Whipple's offense, Sharpe will give every team UMass plays this year matchup problems.

As long time blog readers know, I'm a life long amateur astronomer. Just about the time I'm wrapping up this post, the New Horizons spacecraft will be making it's closest approach to Pluto. I've got NASA TV playing in the background. If you're looking for a good summer read, try Percival's Planet, a fictionalized story of the discovery of the planet Pluto. When I went to the double star meeting last September at Lowell Observatory, I handled the controls to the telescope Clyde Tombaugh used to discover Pluto.

I am old enough to have been around during the start of the Space Age. it's sobering to realize that no one alive on this planet will ever witness another first time planetary fly-by.

Partial quote from a Scout.com article dated last Tuesday:

"I've heard a lot from UMASS, USF, Middle Tennessee and South Carolina lately," Ingram said to the BisonReport. "None of those have offered yet, but UMASS is really interested, USF wants to do some work with me in person and so does South Carolina and Middle Tennessee. They really like me too. I've camped at Rutgers, FAMU and I plan on camping at South Carolina and also Auburn. I have offers right now from Bowling Green, Georgia State, NDSU, FAMU and Bethune Cookman."

Thursday--July 9th, 2015

Hey everyone. Last night the UMass Football Blog went over 2 million page views. Somebody out there is interested in UMass football. A couple of years ago I said I'd do the blog until I hit the 2 million mark. I've been running the blog continuously since 2005, that's like forever in internet time.

However, I'm still having fun with the blog, Coach Whipple has us on the upswing and we're playing some interesting games in the next few years.

Let's shoot for three million.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Matt Sparks has been picked for the Rimington Trophy Watch list. He had previously been picked in May for the same award.

Sparks, BTW was listed as 280 in the last UMass two-deep press release in November of last year, is listed at 300 in the latest roster.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Minutemen A.D. Ryan Bamford continues to build his team as Rob Peterson has been appointed Associate Director of Athletics for Finance and Administration.

Wednesday--July 8th, 2015

The UMass website has a story about Jovan Santos-Knox being named to the Chuck Bednarik Award Watch list. That's the National Defensive player-of-the-Year folks.

Jovan's totals for 2014 were 12-12 GP-GS 53 UT 90 AT 143 TT 8.5-30 TFL 2.0-17 SACKS 6 BU 6 PD 3 FF.

Santos-Knox broke Kole Ayi's single season TT 1998 record (15 games) of 140.5.

Matty Vautour has a post about Santos-Knox.

Alex Alvarado mentions Jovan is the only MAC player on the Bednarik Award Watch list.

Dan Malone also has a story about Santos-Knox.

The return of Shane Huber should give the Minutemen one of the better inside linebacker tandems in the MAC. If Kassan Messiah can stay healthy, he and Trey Seals should be effective at OLB. Since our move to FBS, the defense has had a bend-but-don't-break mode of operation. Maybe in 2015 the defense start to be a force.
